Sacramento Police Officer Tara O’Sullivan, 26, was shot and killed June 19th when she responded to a domestic violence incident in north Sacramento.

The incident began after officers got reports of a disturbance between a man and a woman. Police responded to the home to help the woman gather some belongings. Several officers were at the scene with the woman when the man entered the home and began firing a rifle. The woman was able to get out safely, but O’Sullivan was shot and went down in a yard.

Other officers were forced take cover and couldn’t get to O’Sullivan immediately. An armored vehicle was called to the scene to help get O’Sullivan and she was then taken to the hospital. Meanwhile, the suspect barricaded himself inside the home, and officers set up a perimeter. During the standoff, the man fired at officers several times. He finally surrendered to police and was taken into custody.

O’Sullivan graduated from Sacramento State University in December 2017 from the Law Enforcement Candidate Scholars program.

She was accepted into the Sacramento Police Academy in July 2018, graduating in December 2018.
