Cal Fire Engineer Cory Iverson, 32, died of thermal injuries on December 14th while battling the Thomas Fire in Southern California.

The Thomas Fire, a massive blaze that has grown to become the fourth-biggest in the state’s history, continues to expand.

Iverson was an engineer with Cal Fire’s San Diego unit and would have been in charge of the fire engine and the engine crew, said Cal Fire authorities. He was engaged in fire suppression efforts on the eastern flank of the nearly 390-square-mile Thomas Fire; part of a strike team of two or three other crew members, when he sustained the fatal injuries.

Iverson, had been with Cal Fire for 8 years. He leaves behind his wife Ashley, who is pregnant, and a 2 year-old daughter.
