End of Watch: 4/12/2012
Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Deputy, Robert Paris, 53, was killed April 12, 2012 while serving an eviction notice in North Modesto.
Deputy Paris and a fellow officer were assigned to serve an eviction notice in North Modesto at around 11:00 a.m. when neighbors reported hearing gunshots in rapid succession, as if fired from a semiautomatic weapon. Deputy Paris was killed. It is believed that the Deputies did not have a chance to return fire.
More than 100 police from about 15 valley-based agencies, the FBI and ATF and at least four S.W.A.T. teams on Thursday surrounded the Whispering Woods apartment building, where the alleged shooter was thought to be inside.
Late that day, the apartment erupted in flames. A body, believed to be the shooters, was later found in the burned rubble. It’s not known what sparked the blaze. Authorities said they had not deployed any devices that could have started the fire.
The 53-year-old Paris was a 16-year veteran of the department. He is survived by his parents, a brother and two adult children.
