Oakland Fire Department Interim Assistant Chief Sean Laffan, 42, died November 16th when he suffered a massive cardiac event on duty.
Laffan collapsed in the office of the fire department’s administrative building at about 5 p.m. on November 16th. Staff on site began performing life-saving measures until he was taken by ambulance to Summit Medical Center.
He suffered cardiac arrest at around 10:15 p.m. that night, and his heart function never returned despite resuscitation efforts. His family was notified, and they were met at the hospital by Oakland Fire staff and department leaders.
“Sean Laffan was a dedicated member of the Oakland Fire Department. He began his career in Oakland Fire twenty years ago … and represented our department and the City of Oakland with distinction and enthusiasm for the fire service and our community throughout,” Interim Fire Chief Melinda Drayton said.
Laffan was promoted to interim assistant chief in June 2020.
He is survived by his wife Sabrina, and his 3 sons Caeden, Connor, and Cooper. His son, Caeden, is a probationary firefighter in the Oakland Fire Department.
