U.S. Forest Service Firefighter, Luke Sheehy, 28, was killed on June 10, 2013 after being struck by part of a dead, falling tree just before 5 p.m. The incident occurred while Sheehy was fighting a lightning-strike fire in the Modoc National Forest that day.

Sheehy, a member of the Redding-based California Smokejumpers, was helping to battle the Saddle Back Fire in the South Warner Wilderness about 15 miles southeast of Alturas. The Smokejumpers are firefighters who parachute into remote areas to fight forest fires.

Efforts to resuscitate him were not successful. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Alturas where he was pronounced dead.

Prior to his career with the United States Forest Service, he served 5 seasons as a firefighter for CAL FIRE and as well as being a firefighter for the Diamond Mountain Hotshots with the Bureau of Land Management.

Sheehy is survived by his parents, Doug and Lynn Sheehy.
