Galt Police Department
End of Watch: 1/15/2013
Galt Police Officer, Kevin Tonn, 35, died January 15, 2013 when he was shot after responding to a report of a burglary.
K-9 officer Tonn was one of two officers who responded to a burglary in progress on the 200 block of F Street in Galt around 11:30 a.m. While officers were interviewing neighbors, a witness identified the suspect who was roughly a block away. Tonn attempted to approach the man, but the man became aggressive and an altercation between Tonn and the suspect ensued. At some point during the struggle, the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot Tonn.
Tonn was taken to Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspect, whose identity is not being released by police, continued to fire at officers who had been called in for emergency backup before turning the gun on himself. The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No other officers were hit and Tonn’s police dog, Yaro, was also not injured.
Officer Tonn had been with the department for 3 1/2 years and was a medic and a firefighter in New York before coming to California. He is survived by his parents and his sister.
This is the first line-of-duty death for the Galt Police Department.
