Officer Bryce Hanes, a 12-year veteran of the San Bernardino Police Department, was killed when his patrol car was struck by a suspected drunk driver.
Officer Hanes had just left the West Valley Detention Center in Ontario after booking a prisoner and was returning to his beat. He was driving through an intersection on a green light when the other driver ran the red light and struck Hanes broadside.
The violator was arrested for DUI at the scene, transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, and booked on DUI-related charges.
Officer Hanes suffered major injuries in the collision and was transported to an area hospital, where he died a short time later.
Hanes leaves behind his wife, Alice, and children Abigail, 12, Katie, 10, and Benjamin, 7.
