San Francisco Firefighter-Paramedic Jason Cortez, 42, died October 7th after a training incident at an SFFD training facility.
Firefighter Cortez was at the training facility on 19th and Folsom Street when he fell 3 stories, causing severe head injuries.
SFFD Lt. Jonathan Baxter said the firefighter was transferred to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where he died before 11 a.m.
San Francisco fire officials held a procession for the fallen firefighter from the hospital to the medical examiner’s office. After the procession SFFD Fire Chief Jeanine Nicholson held another press conference.
Cortez began his career as a paramedic at Station 49 in 2007. He later attended the fire academy and graduated as a firefighter-paramedic assigned to Station 3 in San Francisco’s Tenderloin, one of the busiest fire stations in the country.
Firefighter Cortez was the son of a retired San Francisco firefighter. He leaves behind a wife and 2 children.
