El Centro Police Officer Efren Coronel, 51, died June 3rd after contracting COVID-19 as the result of a confirmed exposure during the arrest of an offender.
The offender was positive with COVID-19 which was deemed a world-wide pandemic in early 2020.
Officer Efren Coronel had been hospitalized in San Diego over the past three weeks before finally succumbing to the illness.
Coronel began his carrer with the department on Dec. 17, 1996 and past assignments included school resource officer at Central Union High School, traffic investigations and motor officer. He was also active in youth athletics and served many years as coach of the Dynamo girls’ soccer team. He was a senior patrol officer assigned to Officer in Charge of his patrol team.
Officer Coronel had served with the El Centro Police Department for 24 years. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
