Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy Adam Gibson, 31, was killed in a shootout January 18 at the Cal Expo grounds in Sacramento.
Sacramento County Sheriff’s K-9, Riley, 5 years old, was also killed.
The incident began just after 10 p.m. January 18th when deputies tried to pull over a driver for a traffic stop.The suspect then led deputies on a high-speed chase, that ended when he crashed his car outside the Cal Expo horse racing track. The driver refused to surrender, and a K-9 was sent in to get him out of the car.
The suspect shot and killed the dog, and fired at deputies. A gun battle ensued. Deputy Gibson was killed, and another deputy was wounded. The suspect was also killed in the shootout. The injured deputy is being treated at UC Davis Medical Center.
Gibson was a 6 year veteran and also served in the U.S. Marine Corps, having done 2 tours in Afghanistan.
He leaves behind a wife, Rachel and his 9-month old child.
