Hayward Police Sergeant Scott Lunger, 48, was shot and killed July 22nd after pulling over a vehicle during a traffic stop.

Sergeant Lunger and another officer stopped a driver who was “driving erratically,” according to Hayward police.

The suspect shot at Sgt. Lunger without warning. The second officer returned fire and the suspect then fled the scene.

Neighbors said they heard at least four shots fired. Witnesses heard screeching in the area of the incident before hearing gun shots. They said that one of the officers, Lunger, was shot in the back.

The suspect was wounded in the shootout and went to a hospital to receive treatment, where personnel alerted authorities. He has been taken into custody.

Lunger was a newly appointed Sergeant and had served with the Hayward Police Department for 15 years.

He is survived by his two daughters.
