Riverside County Sheriff’s department police K9, Sultan, 3 years old, was fatally shot January 21st in the Inland Empire area of Hemet, leading to a barricade situation with the suspect.

Sultan, a Belgian Malinois-German shepherd mix, was with a unit of the Sheriff’s department near San Jacinto and Clark Dr. at the time of the shooting. Dozens of officers and deputies gathered outside the animal hospital, where the cruiser Sultan rode in was parked.

The wanted felon had barricaded himself in a home in the area, where a large police presence developed. Authorities sent Sultan into the residence through a small crawlspace, and he came out with a gunshot wound. The felon was shot dead when he emerged from the home brandishing a handgun.

San Jacinto Mayor Crystal Ruiz said that Sultan was the department’s top dog. This was the first Canine Line of Duty Death for Riverside Co. Sheriff’s Department, which has 27 police dogs.
