TO DONATE TO THE FAMILY OF NATHAN TAYLOR:

CHP Officer Nathan Taylor, 35, died March 13th when he was hit by a vehicle on Interstate 80 near Donner Summit the previous night.

Taylor was stationed at the CHP’s Gold Run office. As he was waving traffic over to pass the crash, the driver of a Nissan Pathfinder drove up in the westbound lane, and for an unknown reason, changed lanes from the No. 2 lane to the No. 1 lane, accelerating and passing slow traffic, the CHP said. As the driver came up to Taylor, she lost control of her vehicle and hit Taylor, sending him several feet into the center median snow bank, officers said.

A witness who saw the crash was an off-duty EMT and rendered first aid to Taylor until paramedics arrived.

Taylor was taken to Renown Hospital in Reno with internal injuries and two broken legs, officers said.

The driver of the Nissan was not hurt, and drugs or alcohol were not suspected in the crash.

Taylor was a 6 year veteran of the California Highway Patrol and is survived by his wife,
3 sons, parents, and two brothers. One of his brothers also serves with the California Highway Patrol.
