MICHAEL HALLENBECK

U.S. Forest Service Firefighter Michael Hallenbeck, 21, died August 8th when he was struck by a falling tree while fighting a fire in the Lake Tahoe region. The fire was sparked by lightning.

Hallenbeck, a Shingle Springs resident, is the second California firefighter killed in the line of duty in just over a week. He was killed in the initial attack on a fire that had broken out south of the Echo Summit mountain pass.

He worked in an “On-Call” unit with the U.S. Forest Service.  All day at the forest service headquarters, counselors and support teams from other agencies gathered to try to figure out what went wrong and how to learn from it.
