California Highway Patrol Officer Kirk Griess, 46, was killed on August 10th in a car accident while performing a traffic stop.

Officer Griess, of the Solano CHP office, was on the shoulder of westbound Interstate 80, around 9 a.m. conducting a traffic stop of a Saturn near Manuel Campos Parkway. For an unknown reason, a white Chevy pickup truck veered to the right and hit officer Griess and the vehicle he had stopped.

The truck, the Saturn and Griess’s motorcycle came to a rest in a debris field of twisted metal which was scattered around the highway. All victims were taken to local hospitals. Officer Griess and the Saturn driver were pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Officer Griess is survived by his spouse, two daughters and one son.
