Pomona Police Officer Gregory Casillas, 30, was shot and killed March 9th while trying to apprehend a suspect who barricaded himself in an apartment.

Police responded the 1400 block of South Palomares Street about 9 p.m. Friday to a call about a reckless driver. Responding officers found the vehicle and a short pursuit ensued when the driver failed to stop. The driver then got out of the vehicle after crashing and ran into an apartment complex in the area. The man barricaded himself into a room inside an apartment and eventually shot through a door, wounding the two officers, Bergner said.

The first officer was shot through the door and the second approached to help the first officer and was shot in the face, according to L.A. County Sheriff Jim McDonnell.

Casillas died at the hospital. The 2nd officer was undergoing surgery Saturday morning and is expected to survive. The shooter, 39-year-old Isaias de Jesus Valencia, was arrested after a 15 hours stand off.

Casillas had been with the department since 2014 and leaves behind a wife and 2 small children.
