Palm Springs Officer Jose Gilbert Vega, 63, was killed in a shooting October 8th along with Officer Lesley Zerebny, 27, and another officer wounded in Palm Springs on Saturday,
The community was plunged into mourning as police searched for the suspect.
Dozens of police massed outside a house on the 2700 block of Cypress Road where a suspect appeared to be holed up. Officers took defensive positions behind a patrol car and a concrete wall.
Vega was due to retire in December and had chosen to work overtime on Saturday.
Zerebny had just given birth to a baby girl four months ago. She had been with the department for a year and a half.
The officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at 12:18 p.m. and were at the door of a house when the shooting began, the police chief said.
Police were searching for the gunman in the area of Cypress and Del Lago roads and encouraged residents to stay indoors. Reyes said police had a multi-block perimeter closed off but could not confirm the suspect was inside the area. Multiple officers in tactical gear were taking cover behind a four-foot wall. At 5 p.m., police used a robot and guided it toward the house.
After night fell, police pointed a spotlight at the front door of the house where the suspect appeared to be holed up.
Vega, a 35 yr veteran and father of 8 children, had submitted paperwork to retire in December and was working an overtime shift.
