National Park Service Hot Shot Crew Captain Brian Hughes, 33, died on July 29th while fighting the Ferguson Fire in Mariposa County. He was performing a tactical firing operation in an area of high tree mortality when he was struck by a falling tree.

Captain Hughes passed away before he could be transported to a hospital.

Hughes had been a member of the Arrowhead Hotshot Crew for 4 years, with a total of 12 years as a firefighter. The elite 20-member crew, one of two hotshot crews within the National Park Service, is based at the Sequoia and Kings National Park. Hughes is remembered by this crew-mates as ‘energetic to the fullest’ and a man who always made people smile.

He leaves behind a fiancee who is 13 weeks pregnant at the time of his death.
